An American cat named Daisy was adopted to a pet-rearing friend after being abandoned by a neighbor who believed the cat had rabies.
The friend who adopted the cat told CNN affiliate WFTV that the cat was so sick he could not walk.
The friend said she was going to be rid of him when she found out about the cat and the man who took him in.
A friend found the cat in his yard in Nashua, New Hampshire, about 45 minutes north of Boston.
Daisy’s owner says the cat has rabies and is being treated at a veterinary clinic in Nashuka, New England.
“It’s a big, big loss,” said the friend, who identified herself only as Maria.
Maria told WFtv that she bought the cat for her daughter in 2011, but the cat suffered a severe respiratory infection and needed a hospital stay.
She said the cat eventually was given to another pet-care home, but was eventually returned to Maria.
Maria said the owner was a vet who has since passed away.
According to the National Pet Registry, nearly 4,000 cats have been euthanized since 1976.
